Sarawak Sets 2030 Deadline for Full Hydropower Sustainability Certification

Sarawak is accelerating its renewable energy roadmap by aiming for full compliance with the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS) across all major hydroelectric facilities by 2030 — a move that reaffirms its role as ASEAN’s renewable energy powerhouse.

Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg, in a speech read by Datuk Ibrahim Baki, said the plan represents a balance between economic expansion, environmental stewardship, and regional energy integration.

He pointed to Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (2,520MW) as the benchmark project, having earned both Silver HSS Certification and the Blue Planet Prize 2025, which recognises global excellence in sustainable hydropower operation.

“The certification reflects international confidence in Sarawak’s capacity to operate large-scale, environmentally responsible hydropower projects,” Abang Johari said.

The Premier added that the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant, Sarawak’s first and oldest dam, continues to play a vital role in the state’s energy resilience. The adjoining 50MW floating solar installation represents an innovative leap — merging hydropower with solar energy to create a hybrid generation model that optimises efficiency and land use.

The state’s hydropower strategy forms part of a broader vision to expand clean energy exports across ASEAN through the Sarawak–Singapore Power Interconnection Project.

“Our 2030 target isn’t just about certification — it’s about proving that sustainability and profitability can progress in tandem,” Abang Johari concluded.
