WHO Declares Indonesia Free of Type 2 Poliovirus After Three-Year Outbreak

MANILA — Indonesia has officially ended the circulation of poliovirus type 2 after nearly three years of transmission, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.

The decision follows a nationwide vaccination push that delivered almost 60 million extra doses of polio vaccine to children. No virus has been found in clinical or environmental samples since June 2024.

The outbreak began in Aceh in October 2022 before spreading across several provinces, including Banten, West Java, East Java, North Maluku and parts of Papua.

The final case of cVDPV2 was reported in South Papua on June 27, 2024.

WHO Western Pacific Regional Director Saia Ma’u Piukala said Indonesia’s progress reinforces the region’s long-standing polio-free status.
