PUTRAJAYA: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil renewed his push for a national social media age limit of 16, citing a recent case where a primary school student misused WhatsApp to solicit inappropriate images from a teacher.
He said such incidents highlight real risks faced by minors online and justify the need for stronger regulatory controls.
Fahmi explained that the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 provides enforcement tools including heavy fines and potential identity verification requirements modelled after Australia’s policy.
He added that the Safe Internet Campaign will be scaled up next year, targeting schools, universities, community groups, and vulnerable digital users.
