MELAKA: The Melaka state government has affirmed that free influenza vaccination will be provided exclusively to elderly individuals with chronic diseases due to their increased risk of severe complications, said Exco Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem.
He explained that conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension significantly heighten vulnerability to life-threatening influenza infections.
Ngwe also highlighted that while antiviral drugs like Tamiflu are available at MOH hospitals and clinics, prescriptions are required to prevent misuse, as up to 90% of influenza cases recover without antiviral treatment.
The state is considering partnerships with private clinics to expand public healthcare access, but such plans must first undergo detailed review and be formalised at the federal level.
