Gua Musang Residents Told to Prepare for Sudden Second Flood Wave as Landslides Reported in Interior

Authorities in Kelantan are urging residents of Gua Musang to heighten their preparedness as warnings intensify over a possible second wave of severe flooding triggered by the North-east Monsoon. The call for vigilance comes as interior regions continue to grapple with the aftermath of the first wave, which struck earlier in the monsoon season.

JPBD chairman Mohd Roshdi Ismail said that widespread flooding had affected numerous Orang Asli settlements, leaving several areas inaccessible and forcing emergency teams to monitor the situation closely. Landslides triggered by prolonged rains have further complicated rescue and relief operations, with part of the Gua Musang–Lojing highway collapsing under continuous soil movement.

“We are still fully within the monsoon period. The likelihood of a second wave remains high, and residents must understand that it can occur suddenly, without long lead time,” he said. “Anyone living along riverbanks or in areas historically prone to flooding must remain alert and prepared for immediate evacuation.”

He urged residents to safeguard essential items—identification documents, cash, medications, and valuables—by placing them in waterproof containers or keeping them in easily accessible bags. Roshdi stressed that evacuation instructions issued by local authorities are designed to protect lives and should be obeyed promptly.

He also expressed concern for the Orang Asli population, many of whom live in remote, forested regions where access roads are narrow and landslide risks are high during continuous rainfall.

“We want to avoid any loss of life. Landslides are a real threat, especially after prolonged saturation of the soil,” he added.

For families with young children, Roshdi issued an additional warning: prevent children from playing in floodwaters, even shallow ones, as rapid changes in water flow or hidden hazards pose serious risks.

Meanwhile, Nadma has stated that its teams nationwide are on high alert, ensuring that evacuation centres, relief items, and emergency hotlines are ready to be mobilised swiftly in anticipation of worsening weather.
