PWCC Seen as Key Driver as Penang’s MICE Sector Reaches RM1 Billion Impact

GEORGE TOWN — Penang’s MICE sector achieved an estimated RM1 billion in economic impact last year, underlining the state’s rising profile as a leading destination for business events and conventions.

According to Wong Hon Wai, the contribution reflects the cumulative impact of conferences, exhibitions and corporate events on sectors such as hospitality, transportation, retail and logistics.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre will play a central role in sustaining growth momentum by accommodating increasing demand from event organisers.

He noted that PWCC complements existing facilities rather than competing with them, and that its surrounding mixed-use development will act as a catalyst for broader economic activity.

IJM long-term development director Tony Ling Thou Lung said the integrated project was designed to support the convention centre’s operations and enhance its attractiveness as a comprehensive MICE destination.
