ALOR SETAR, August 24, 2025 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has announced his intention to appeal the Alor Setar High Court’s decision today in relation to the defamation lawsuit filed against him by Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
In an official statement, Saifuddin said he respects the court’s ruling and expressed his appreciation to the judiciary for its time, attention, and consideration throughout the proceedings.
However, after reviewing the judgment with his legal team, the Home Minister stated that there are strong legal grounds for an appeal.
He has instructed his lawyers to file the appeal at the Court of Appeal immediately and will also be applying for a stay of execution pending the appeal process.
“As someone who respects the rule of law, I believe the country’s judicial system will provide a fair avenue for me to present my arguments and uphold the truth,” he said.
Saifuddin emphasized that the statements he made on July 14 and 15, 2023 — which were the subject of the lawsuit — were made in the context of his responsibilities in addressing matters of public interest.
“I remain committed to the principles of openness, integrity, and accountability, which are the cornerstones of democratic practice,” he added.
The defamation suit stemmed from remarks made by Saifuddin in 2023, which Sanusi claimed were defamatory.
Earlier, Justice Johan Lee Abdullah ordered Saifuddin to pay RM600,000 in general damages and RM70,000 in costs to Sanusi.
