KUCHING, Nov 4 — In a remarkable show of global admiration, Sarawak’s Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) has climbed to the No.1 spot worldwide on the Museum World Ranking website, surpassing none other than the Louvre Museum in Paris — home to the Mona Lisa.
As of this afternoon, BCM leads with 4,245 online votes, outpacing the Louvre’s 4,027, and standing above other prestigious names like Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology, Spain’s Guggenheim Bilbao, and the United States’ Getty Centre.
The museum’s rise reflects more than numbers — it is a testament to the world’s growing fascination with Borneo’s heritage, art, and identity.
Since opening its doors in March 2022, BCM has stood as Malaysia’s largest museum and a symbol of Sarawak’s evolving cultural narrative.
Towering five storeys high on Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, its galleries immerse visitors in centuries of indigenous wisdom, creativity, and craftsmanship — from ancient rituals to modern expressions of culture.
By mid-2025, more than 1.35 million visitors from 150 countries had stepped through its doors, drawn by its seamless blend of traditional storytelling and modern design.
Earlier this year, BCM entered the Museum World Ranking for the first time, landing at 305th place among 413 institutions worldwide.
A post on the museum’s Facebook page proudly thanked global supporters and invited continued voting, positioning BCM as not just a museum, but a beacon of Malaysian cultural pride on the world stage.
