Emma and Alyani Inspire on the Greens

Under the soft afternoon sun at Bukit Kiara, Emma Firyana Saroji bent low, eyes locked on the jack. The crowd fell silent as her bowl glided smoothly across the green — a scene that captured the essence of her composure and years of experience.

On the opening day of the 2025 World Bowls Championships, the 39-year-old from Sepang delivered two impressive victories that placed her firmly among the contenders. She defeated Katelyn Inch (New Zealand) and Caroline Brown (Scotland), falling only once to England’s Katherine Rednall in a narrow contest.

“If my first bowl lands close, I know I can control the tempo,” she said, smiling modestly after her matches.

Her resilience shone through after the loss to Rednall — a setback that might have rattled lesser players.

“I told myself not to panic. Stay focused, trust the training, and play my game,” Emma recalled. “It paid off.”

With two more matches to play against South Africa and Ireland, Emma remains poised for a spot in the quarter-finals — one win away from making Malaysian fans dream again.

Meanwhile, Nurul Alyani Jamil, her younger teammate, also rose to the occasion with a clean 2–0 win over Selina Goddard (New Zealand). Her energy and optimism add fresh fire to Malaysia’s campaign.

“This good start gives us belief,” Alyani said. “If we keep this rhythm, we’ll bring the same confidence to the pairs event.”

Together, Emma and Alyani represent the blend of experience and youth that defines Malaysia’s new generation of athletes — calm, focused, and unafraid to face the world’s best.
