Zahid–KJ Meeting Stirs Old Ties, Not New Deals

A wedding hall in Perlis became the unexpected stage for political whispers last weekend. When Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Khairy Jamaluddin (KJ) were seen exchanging greetings, the image quickly lit up Malaysia’s political circles — was this the first sign of reconciliation within UMNO?

Zahid, however, was quick to dampen speculation.

“Yes, I met him. But we didn’t discuss anything,” he told reporters at the Putrajaya Ideas Festival 2025.

The meeting, it turns out, was nothing more than a friendly encounter at the wedding of Datuk Rozabil Abdul Rahman’s daughter. Yet, in the world of Malaysian politics, even a handshake can spark headlines.

Khairy, once UMNO’s rising star and now a popular radio host, has asked for “a few weeks” before addressing rumours of his return. He maintains that he never quit UMNO — he was expelled in January 2023 for voicing criticism during GE15.

Still, political observers note that the timing of the encounter is intriguing. With Sabah’s state election looming and UMNO struggling to regain ground, a Khairy comeback could reshape the party’s narrative — from survival to revival.

For now, the meeting between Zahid and KJ remains a symbolic reunion rather than a political negotiation — a reminder of past loyalties, unfinished conversations, and the unpredictable rhythm of Malaysian politics.
