Malaysia’s Armed Forces Reaffirm Global Peacekeeping Role, Eyes Deployment to Gaza

SUBANG, Nov 5 — As conflict continues to devastate Gaza, Malaysia has once again declared its readiness to play a role in international peacekeeping, with the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) preparing to send troops should a mission be sanctioned under the United Nations (UN).

The announcement came from General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, during the flag handover ceremony for the 13th Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT 850-13) bound for Lebanon under UNIFIL, continuing Malaysia’s peacekeeping legacy that began there in 2007.

Describing the operation as a “historic milestone,” General Nizam highlighted that Malaysia’s forces will continue training Lebanese soldiers and leaving behind essential equipment to assist local defence capacity even after their rotation ends.

He confirmed that the gradual withdrawal of Malaysian assets from Lebanon will begin mid-year, signalling the transition of responsibility to the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Turning to Gaza, General Nizam said Malaysia stands ready to act in accordance with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s directive and humanitarian vision.

“Malaysia’s commitment is clear. We await the mandate — whether under the UN or a separate coalition — and are ready for deployment once directed,” he said.

He added that the MAF has begun assessing force configurations, including mechanised, medical, and logistics contingents to adapt to mission needs.

Analysts see Malaysia’s potential deployment to Gaza as a continuation of its longstanding peace diplomacy, strengthening Kuala Lumpur’s reputation as a moderate voice and reliable UN contributor.

“The Malaysian Armed Forces will remain on full alert, ready to uphold peace and demonstrate Malaysia’s leadership in global humanitarian efforts,” Nizam affirmed.
