IPOH: With the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup just hours away, the Malaysian national hockey team are stepping into the tournament with renewed energy and confidence, especially following the return of prolific striker Faizal Saari.
Coach Sarjit Singh says the team are eager to harness the emotion and excitement of playing at home, backed by supporters who have never failed to ignite stadium atmosphere.
“The players have worked tirelessly. What we want now is for them to express that effort on the field,” he said.
For captain Muhammad Marhan Jalil, the message is simple but powerful: Malaysia will fight to the final whistle.
“We understand the quality of teams here, but we will not shy away from the battle. Every game is an opportunity to prove ourselves,” he said.
Standing in their way is the formidable Belgium team, who enter with star-studded credentials and a reputation for excellence on the international stage.
Their coach, Shane McLeod, said the squad is highly motivated after extensive preparations in Europe.
Other teams — including India, New Zealand, Canada and South Korea — also arrive with strong ambitions, promising a tournament filled with drama, intensity and top-tier hockey.
