Sabah’s concerns valid as “legacy” problems hinder project completion – Anwar

SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says longstanding structural issues and incomplete development projects have fuelled dissatisfaction among Sabahans, even though the federal government has channelled large sums to the state.

At a press conference following the Malaysia–Singapore Leaders’ Retreat, Anwar said Pakatan Harapan respects voters’ choices in the 17th Sabah election and acknowledges that historical sentiment involving the Federation may play a role in influencing political support.

He admitted that basic infrastructure projects — including water, electricity and road upgrades — remain unfinished in several areas, causing anxiety and perceptions that the Federation has failed to deliver.

“These are unresolved legacy issues that require attention,” Anwar said.

He added that rural and suburban areas in Sabah still face fundamental shortages in essential services, reinforcing the belief that development promises were unmet.

Despite this, Anwar said the federal government will continue strengthening cooperation with Sabah and resolving issues progressively.

On MA63, he said negotiations at various levels, including with the Malay Rulers, have been aimed at addressing development responsibilities while respecting Sabah’s historical identity.

The federal government has also devolved certain powers, such as electricity supply management, and allocated RM1.2 billion for urgent projects.
