Palm Biomass Identified as Key Driver for Malaysia’s Emission Reduction Efforts

GENTING HIGHLANDS – Malaysia’s vast volume of palm biomass could become a central driver of national emission reduction strategies, according to MPOB Director-General Datuk Dr. Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Khadir.

He stated that the combination of 5.7 million hectares of plantations and abundant biomass resources positions Malaysia well to support global climate commitments.

Studies show that mature oil palm plantations can store large amounts of carbon, ranging from 30 to 40 tonnes per hectare. Meanwhile, converting biomass into renewable energy and green materials can prevent additional CO₂ and methane emissions.

Dr. Ahmad Parveez emphasised that Malaysia must ensure smallholder inclusion by providing straightforward methodologies and digital tools to help them participate in carbon markets.
