Malay and English Both Crucial in the Age of AI, Says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian government remains firmly committed to ensuring that the Malay language continues to function effectively as a medium of instruction and knowledge dissemination in the era of artificial intelligence and digital technology, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He stressed that Malay must not be marginalised in the pursuit of technological advancement, but instead strengthened so it can be used meaningfully in fields such as digital innovation, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

“Our goal is to elevate the Malay language as a language of instruction and learning. Even in areas like digital technology and AI, teaching and knowledge development should be able to take place in Malay,” Anwar said.

At the same time, he emphasised that proficiency in English as a second language is equally critical to ensure that Malaysian students remain competitive on the international stage.

According to Anwar, the government’s approach to language policy is not a zero-sum game, but a balanced strategy that reflects national priorities and global realities.

Malaysia’s position as an open trading nation and its growing involvement in advanced technologies make strong English proficiency a strategic necessity, he added.

Speaking at a Christmas tea reception organised by the Christian Federation of Malaysia, Anwar said parents across all education streams share a common aspiration: that their children master both Malay and English.

He praised the overall level of Malay proficiency among Malaysians, noting that it reflects the success of long-standing language policies.

However, he acknowledged that in an increasingly globalised world, English should not be treated merely as an additional subject, but as a tool for mastering knowledge, technology and international engagement.

Anwar reaffirmed that the constitutional status of Malay as the national language will continue to be upheld and defended.

“As Prime Minister, I will ensure that the principles enshrined in the Federal Constitution regarding the Malay language are respected and preserved,” he said.

He added that discussions involving language, religion and race must always be handled with care, wisdom and sensitivity to maintain national harmony.
