KUALA LUMPUR: The recent Cabinet reshuffle has prompted a response from UMNO Youth in the Federal Territories, following the appointment of Hannah Yeoh as the new Minister of Federal Territories, with the youth wing expressing concerns over the broader implications of the decision.
UMNO Youth Federal Territories chief Datuk Aliff Firdaus Abd Hadi said the Federal Territories play a pivotal role as the country’s administrative and political centre, making leadership of the portfolio a matter of national significance. He stressed that policies introduced at this level often have far-reaching effects beyond the capital.
Aliff Firdaus highlighted that urban Malays are currently facing mounting challenges, including rising living costs, limited access to affordable housing and increasing competition in the job market. Against this backdrop, he said leadership in the Federal Territories must be sensitive to the socio-economic realities faced by the local population.
One of the key concerns raised relates to the potential implementation of party agendas, including proposals for local government elections and the formation of an Urban Redevelopment Authority. According to Aliff Firdaus, such initiatives could alter existing governance frameworks and impact urban communities if not handled with care.
He also drew attention to the minister’s role as a member of the Pardons Board, stressing that decisions made in this capacity must be guided solely by justice and public interest, free from political considerations.
While acknowledging Hannah Yeoh’s appointment and extending congratulations, Aliff Firdaus reminded that the position carries a heavy responsibility to serve all segments of society fairly and inclusively.
UMNO Youth Federal Territories, he said, will continue to act as a watchdog, monitoring policies and decisions related to the Federal Territories to ensure that the rights and interests of urban Malays remain protected.
