Malaysia Moves to Enhance Online Safety for Children Through Stronger Regulation and Collaboration

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is stepping up efforts to enhance online safety for children as part of a broader push to address rising digital risks associated with increased Internet and social media use.

The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) said it will continue to implement comprehensive child protection initiatives, including digital safety awareness programmes and strengthened regulatory enforcement.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said protecting children in the digital environment has become increasingly critical as online platforms play a central role in everyday life.

She highlighted the importance of strategic collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and other stakeholders to ensure effective prevention and enforcement.

The introduction of the Deeming Provision under Section 46A of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 marks a significant step in holding large-scale digital service providers accountable for user safety.

Under the provision, messaging and social media platforms with substantial user bases will be subject to licensing requirements, reinforcing regulatory oversight and consistency.

Nancy emphasised that while regulation plays a key role, parental guidance and community vigilance are equally important in safeguarding children online.

She encouraged parents, educators and the public to actively report concerns through Talian Kasih 15999, ensuring swift response and protection for vulnerable individuals.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader commitment to promoting family wellbeing and creating a safer digital ecosystem for future generations.
