RM30 Million Media Innovation Fund Timely to Strengthen National Media Competitiveness — MPI

PUTRAJAYA — The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has praised the government’s decision to introduce the RM30 million Media Innovation Fund, calling it a well-timed move to accelerate digital transformation within Malaysia’s media industry.

MPI Chief Executive Officer Ainol Amriz Ismail said the fund reflects the government’s serious commitment to maintaining a robust, credible and forward-looking media ecosystem capable of adapting to digital disruption and technological change.

He said the fund should not only be viewed as financial assistance but as a catalyst to encourage innovation, creative journalism models and technology-driven growth.

Ainol stressed that building journalist competency through structured training programmes remains a critical factor in the success of media transformation. Fast, accurate, ethical and technologically capable journalism is essential, he added, especially as the industry navigates the rise of AI and digital platforms.

He also welcomed eligibility conditions such as JAPEN registration and active Media Accreditation Cards to ensure integrity, accountability and fairness in fund distribution.

MPI expressed willingness to support the Ministry of Communications in implementing the initiative, particularly through capacity-building and professional development programmes to prepare practitioners for future challenges.

Calling it a long-term investment, MPI said the fund will strengthen Malaysia’s media role in delivering reliable information, shaping informed public discourse and contributing to national progress within a complex digital environment.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil earlier confirmed that Phase 1 of the Media Innovation Fund will be open between 1 and 14 January 2026, following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of the RM30 million allocation during HAWANA 2025.
