Selangor DAP Youth Condemns Political Intimidation, Maintains Unwavering Backing for Yeo Bee Yin

KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor’s Democratic Action Party Youth (DAPSY Selangor) has pledged unwavering solidarity with Yeo Bee Yin, asserting that the recent protest by UMNO Youth members outside her parliamentary office constitutes an unhealthy form of political pressure and an attempt to intimidate elected representatives.

In an official statement, DAPSY Selangor criticised the action as a deliberate move to create provocation and public spectacle rather than engage in constructive democratic discourse. They argued that mature politics should prioritise reasoned debate, fairness and respect for differing opinions, especially on contentious issues such as the Titah Adendum controversy.

The youth movement affirmed that no amount of public pressure, orchestrated gatherings or symbolic displays of strength would alter their stance on defending credible, ethical and fact-driven politics. Instead, they maintained that political actors must uphold dignity, civility and respect when responding to disagreements.

DAPSY Selangor also questioned the selective outrage shown towards Yeo Bee Yin’s remarks, recalling how widespread critical and sarcastic public commentary emerged when Najib Razak was imprisoned in 2022. They argued that targeting a single political figure under current circumstances suggests a strategic political move rather than genuine concern.

The latest uproar originated from Yeo Bee Yin’s social media post celebrating the High Court’s decision to dismiss Najib’s judicial review bid, in which she described the ruling as a reason to rejoice at the year’s end. UMNO leaders condemned the statement as improper and insensitive.

However, according to DAPSY Selangor, the right to express political opinions must remain respected within a democratic framework. They stressed that turning political disagreement into organised intimidation risks eroding democratic norms and could set a dangerous precedent.

The statement added that actions undertaken by UMNO Youth seemingly mirror leadership that thrives on dramatic gestures and symbolic acts rather than engaging substantive policy debates. DAPSY Selangor called on political parties to promote civic responsibility instead of cultivating hostility.

Despite the escalating rhetoric, the youth wing reiterated that it will continue supporting Yeo Bee Yin while prioritising principled politics grounded in accountability, law, and respect for public institutions. They asserted that Malaysia must move toward a political culture rooted in intellect and integrity, rather than fear-based strategies.
