PETALING JAYA — Malaysia’s national utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), has reinforced its commitment to energy resilience through the award of a RM177.36 million submarine power cable upgrade project to a consortium comprising South Korea’s LS Cable & System Ltd and MN Holdings Bhd. The project underscores strategic efforts to future-proof electricity supply to Langkawi and enhance the robustness of national energy infrastructure.
Announcing the development, MN Holdings revealed that its subsidiary MN Utilities Engineering Sdn Bhd holds a 10 per cent stake in the consortium. LS Cable, one of the world’s foremost cable technology players, holds 89 per cent while Pembinaan Tajri Sdn Bhd owns the remaining one per cent. The upgrade project involves strengthening the 132kV subsea cable transmission route connecting Kuala Perlis to Teluk Apau in Langkawi.
The scope of work includes procurement of advanced subsea cables, meticulous installation processes, technical performance testing and full commissioning. With a targeted completion period of approximately 15 months, the project is designed to ensure uninterrupted electricity connectivity while undergoing transformation.
MN Holdings emphasised that the project will enhance its financial outlook and reputation as a trusted engineering organisation capable of delivering mission-critical infrastructure. It is also seen as strong validation of TNB’s confidence in the consortium’s engineering excellence and execution reliability.
Langkawi’s role as a premier tourism and economic destination means uninterrupted electricity supply is not merely an operational requirement, but a strategic necessity. The strengthened subsea cable network will enable more resilient energy delivery, support industrial expansion, and enhance long-term development planning for the island.
Submarine power cable projects demand precision, highly specialised engineering expertise and strict adherence to marine safety and environmental standards. The project is expected to embed global best practices while providing valuable knowledge-transfer opportunities for Malaysia’s engineering workforce.
On a broader scale, analysts view this development as aligned with Malaysia’s wider push to modernise grid infrastructure, bolster energy security and transition toward more advanced utility ecosystems. By partnering with LS Cable, Malaysia continues to nurture international technological collaboration while strengthening domestic engineering competencies.
The project is anticipated to create positive spillover effects including employment opportunities, development of technical expertise, and strengthening of local supply chains supporting the utility industry.
As Malaysia moves forward with greater emphasis on energy reliability, sustainability and resilience, the RM177.36 million submarine cable upgrade stands as a strategic investment that supports national growth while ensuring communities and industries continue to benefit from stable and secure electricity supply.
