Umno Youth chief urges end to Perikatan Nasional amid Perlis fallout, accuses coalition of betrayal

PETALING JAYA — Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has urged Perikatan Nasional to be dissolved, claiming the coalition is facing serious internal trust issues following PAS’ decision to expel three Perlis state assemblymen.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Akmal lamented the political state of Perlis, saying the latest developments proved his long-standing view that Muafakat Nasional should have remained the main platform instead of PN.

“Perlis, oh Perlis. This is what I’ve been warning about. Now betrayal is happening openly. It’s better to end Perikatan Nasional and return to Muafakat Nasional,” he said.

Muafakat Nasional was a political alliance once formed between Umno and PAS in 2019 as an effort to consolidate Malay political support.

Yesterday, PAS terminated the membership of Chuping assemblyman Saad Seman, Bintong assemblyman Fakhrul Anwar Ismail and Guar Sanji assemblyman Mohd Ridzuan Hashim.

Perlis Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli supported the move and described it as a wise decision.

Their expulsion coincides with reports of statutory declarations signed by PAS and Bersatu assemblymen indicating declining support for the state government, signalling growing instability within Perlis’ political landscape.
