Muhyiddin Denies Bersatu Ordered Perlis Reps to Sign SD, Says Party Will Only Submit MB Candidate When Summoned by Palace

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has denied claims that Bersatu had instructed its Perlis assemblymen to sign any statutory declarations related to the current political tensions in the state. The Bersatu president said the party did not issue any such directive and warned against misinformation that may further complicate the situation.

He clarified that Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional are committed to upholding constitutional principles and respecting the authority of the Raja of Perlis in determining the appointment of the Menteri Besar. He stressed that the party will only present its candidate’s name when officially requested by the palace.

Muhyiddin reiterated that PN acknowledges the royal prerogative vested in the Ruler under the State Constitution. Any decision on who will lead the state government is ultimately determined by the Raja based on confidence of the State Assembly majority.

It had previously been reported that three names were shortlisted as possible Menteri Besar candidates — Abu Bakar Hamzah, Megat Hashirat Hassan and Izizam Ibrahim. However, Muhyiddin said the matter remains subject to palace discretion and no submission has been made without royal instruction.

The political crisis deepened when eight assemblymen withdrew their support for the sitting Menteri Besar by signing SDs. The development not only destabilised the state administration but also introduced uncertainty into Perlis politics. Compounding the situation, three of the assemblymen involved were Pas representatives who were subsequently stripped of their party membership.

This caused three state seats to fall vacant, namely Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji. The vacancies are expected to be formally notified to the Election Commission, paving the way for by-elections.

The situation has drawn significant public and national attention as Perlis — once perceived as politically steady — now finds itself at the centre of a major political episode. Analysts have noted that the developments could reshape the state’s political landscape moving forward.

Muhyiddin urged the public and political stakeholders to remain calm, avoid speculation and allow the crisis to be handled through institutional and constitutional avenues. He assured that PN will continue prioritising the stability of governance and the interests of the people.

He expressed confidence that with respect for the monarchy, adherence to the constitution and mature political conduct, the ongoing political crisis can be resolved responsibly and in an orderly manner.
