Northeast Monsoon Puts Indigenous Communities at Risk: Six Settlements in Kelantan on High Alert

GUA MUSANG: As heavy rain from the Northeast Monsoon continues to sweep across Kelantan, six indigenous Orang Asli settlements have now been officially listed as high-risk disaster areas, triggering heightened monitoring efforts and emergency preparedness measures.

The settlements identified as “hot spot” areas are Pos Lebir, Pos Bihai, Pos Balar, Pos Belatim, Pos Simpor and Pos Gob — locations primarily situated in interior and hilly landscapes, where infrastructure and accessibility are already limited.

According to Kelantan and Terengganu JAKOA Director Mohd Faedzyal Mohamed, continuous heavy rainfall has destabilised soil conditions, significantly increasing the risk of landslides, erosion and road damage. In some areas, overflowing rivers further threaten critical access routes.

“This prolonged wet weather has serious implications for daily mobility and safety. Landslides and road disruptions not only isolate communities but also hamper essential activities including access to food, healthcare, education and economic movement,” he explained.

To mitigate risks, JAKOA is working closely with various government agencies to ensure continuous communication, preparedness and prompt assistance when needed. Emergency food supplies and basic necessities have been distributed as precautionary support to vulnerable communities.

At the same time, Orang Asli residents are urged to remain highly alert, minimise exposure to hazardous terrain, and travel in groups when entering forest areas to reduce danger in emergency situations.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department’s recent issuance of a “danger-level” continuous rain warning for Kelantan until December 30 underscores the seriousness of the situation. The warning signifies potential flooding and related disasters that may intensify over the coming days.

For the Orang Asli communities living in deeply forested and remote regions, resilience has long been part of their daily lives. Yet, the current monsoon season highlights the importance of preparedness, community cooperation and government assistance to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
