Sanusi urges revival of Muafakat Nasional spirit as Pas seeks unity ahead of GE16

ALOR SETAR — Pas has reiterated its call for the Muafakat Nasional (MN) spirit to be revived as the basis for strengthening Malay-Muslim unity as the country prepares for the 16th General Election, with party leader Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor stressing its importance to political continuity and national stability.

Sanusi, who serves as Pas Central Election Director, said Pas remains receptive to support from UMNO grassroots members who believe in Pas’ direction, even if they continue to remain within UMNO’s organisational structure. He believes a significant number of UMNO supporters understand the importance of unity and will stand together with Pas when the time comes.

Reflecting on previous cooperation under Muafakat Nasional, Sanusi said the partnership had once brought communities closer together, reducing political hostility while fostering a sense of brotherhood between Pas and UMNO supporters at the grassroots level.

He emphasised that such unity should be reignited, particularly as both groups share similar religious foundations, communal background and aspirations. According to him, unity is essential not only in daily life but also within governance, political administration and national leadership.

Sanusi, who is also Kedah PN chairman, stressed that Pas does not discriminate when it comes to political partnerships and remains open to working with any party based on fairness and shared objectives. He encouraged Pas members to remain dedicated in preparation for GE16, urging them to continue working hard to secure electoral success.

The idea of restoring Muafakat Nasional was recently raised by UMNO Youth Chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh following political developments in Perlis, where several state assemblymen were reported to have withdrawn support for the current leadership, potentially triggering by-elections.

The proposal has since been supported by Pas Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who described the revival of MN as a positive step towards rebuilding Malay-Muslim unity. Discussions surrounding the alliance highlight continuing efforts by political leaders to reassess cooperation strategies ahead of the next national polls.
