SUPP defends RM1 million donation from Najib, says allegations of 1MDB link already disproven

SIBU — The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has once again clarified that the RM1 million contribution it received from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in 2013 was not sourced from 1MDB funds, stressing that the matter had been legally resolved years ago.

The party said the donation was received at a time when there was no indication that the funds were tainted or associated with any wrongdoing, adding that subsequent developments regarding Najib and 1MDB only emerged later.

SUPP’s statement came in response to DAP’s Pending assemblyman Violet Yong, who urged the party to return the funds, alleging that the contribution was from 1MDB.

SUPP reiterated that the issue had already been investigated thoroughly and subjected to legal scrutiny.
In 2019, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) issued a forfeiture notice for RM188,132.26 from the party’s bank account, although it was unrelated to the 2013 donation. The matter was later brought to court.

However, in July 2020, the High Court dismissed the forfeiture bid after MACC failed to prove any connection to 1MDB. The party said the ruling was widely publicised and well known among political circles, including Sarawak DAP leaders.

Expressing disappointment over the renewed allegations, SUPP claimed the issue was being revived merely for political mileage.

The party urged all parties to shift focus towards meaningful political financing reforms, saying structured and transparent funding mechanisms would benefit Malaysia’s democratic landscape moving forward.
