PUTRAJAYA — The Malaysian government has formally launched the Online Safety Committee, signalling a stronger regulatory and advisory approach to tackling online harms in an increasingly complex digital environment.
Announcing the appointments, Minister Azalina Othman Said said the committee will serve as the highest strategic advisory body under the Online Safety Act 2025, which came into force recently.
Chaired by Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, the committee will advise the MCMC on identifying harmful and priority content, improving enforcement mechanisms and strengthening user protection frameworks.
A key area of focus will be emerging threats such as AI-enabled fraud, deepfake abuse and sophisticated cyber exploitation, which pose growing risks to individuals and institutions alike.
The committee’s diverse membership is intended to ensure balanced decision-making that reflects technological realities, industry practices and public interest considerations.
Azalina reiterated that Malaysia’s approach to online safety seeks to uphold free expression while ensuring that digital spaces remain secure, inclusive and protective of society’s most vulnerable members.
