Sarawak To Host First International DanceSport Championship This September

KUCHING: Sarawak is set to make history when it hosts the first ever Sarawak International Open DanceSport Championship 2025 on 20 September at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the championship, organised by the Sarawak DanceSport Association (SDA) with the recognition of the DanceSport Federation of Malaysia, also received the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Sarawak Ministry for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.

“We expect around 200 participants and guests from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and India to participate.

“On the final night, over 300 spectators will witness the great performances in the Latin, Standard, and Breaking categories,” he explained.

Datuk Snowdan said the tournament offers a total prize pool of RM30,000 including a RM15,000 cash voucher to be won by participants in the open, adult, youth, teenagers and children categories.

Apart from being a stage for competition, he added, this event symbolises Sarawak’s long-term efforts in strengthening sports tourism, as well as providing international exposure to local talent.

“With the support of the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Sarawak State Sports Council, we are confident that this event will not only elevate DanceSport but also showcase the hospitality of the Sarawakians and the Olympic spirit that celebrates regional friendship,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also expressed his appreciation to the SDA leadership led by its Chairman, Chester Lim Hian Thoong for the organisation of the competition.

The public is invited to attend to witness the beauty, energy and the spirit of DanceSport on 20 September 2025 which will take place at BCCK.
