Integrity in question: another civil servant accused of corruption

GEORGE TOWN — He walked into the MACC Penang office to give a statement, but by noon, the former government deputy director was under arrest.

The 50-something man is suspected of receiving RM35,000 from a contractor in 2022, allegedly in exchange for approving a project tender.

According to investigators, the money was deposited into his personal bank account and partly handed over in cash.

Confirming the arrest, MACC Penang director Datuk S. Karunanithy said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

The suspect has been remanded for 24 hours pending further investigation.

Each such arrest, however small the figure, serves as a reminder that corruption — at any scale — erodes the foundations of trust in public institutions.
