Aisyah Ends Gold Drought with Tactical Sprint in Women’s Scratch at SEA Games

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian track cyclist Nur Aisyah Mohamad Zubir finally ended her long wait for gold after delivering a composed and tactical performance to win the women’s scratch race at the Thailand 2025 SEA Games.

Competing at the Hua Mark Velodrome in Bangkok, the 28-year-old adopted a patient approach from the start, positioning herself behind a group of six riders while carefully monitoring the pace and movements of her rivals.

Rather than engaging in early attacks, Aisyah conserved her energy and waited for the decisive moment. Her strategy paid off in the final lap when she launched a powerful sprint, overtaking four riders in quick succession to cross the finish line first.

Singapore’s Valencia Tan claimed the silver medal, while Indonesia continued its consistent podium presence through Ayustina Delia Priatna, who secured bronze.

The gold medal was especially meaningful for Aisyah, who had endured disappointment after missing out on top honours in the women’s criterium and individual road race events earlier in the Games.

Analysts noted that Aisyah’s victory was a product of race intelligence and experience, rather than raw power alone. The scratch race demands precise timing and situational awareness, qualities that Aisyah displayed with confidence.

This triumph also boosted Malaysia’s overall medal tally and reinforced the nation’s strength in women’s track cycling at the regional level.

With renewed confidence, Aisyah is expected to carry this momentum into future international competitions, serving as both a contender and a role model for younger Malaysian cyclists.
