Inquest into Zara Qairina’s Death to Run Alongside Criminal Investigation — Datuk M. Kumar

KUALA LUMPUR — The inquest into the death of schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir will proceed concurrently with ongoing police investigations, which now include the possibility of foul play, authorities confirmed.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department (CID) director, Comm Datuk M. Kumar, said the special task force handling the case had recorded statements suggesting bullying took place prior to the incident.

“There have been statements indicating that bullying occurred before the tragedy. Previously, we did not have specific legal provisions addressing bullying, but these have been enforced as of July 11 to better address such cases,” he said during a special press conference on Wednesday (Aug 13).

He added that the investigation is ongoing and the findings will be submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers in due course.

In light of the incident, Comm Kumar said mental health interventions have been introduced at the school to support affected students.

“A total of 124 students are currently undergoing intervention. This process includes psychiatric support to help them cope with the emotional aftermath,” he said.

Comm Kumar assured that the investigation would be conducted with full transparency and diligence.

“I give you all my assurance. There will be justice,” he stated.
