KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19, 2025 — Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol has raised concern over the government’s recent allocation of RM8.4 million for the supply of Jalur Gemilang flag badges, compared to only RM3 million for the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in selected boarding schools.
In a media statement today, Mordi acknowledged the symbolic value of items like national flag badges in shaping student identity.
However, he stressed that the government must prioritise the safety and well-being of students, which are essential for creating a conducive learning environment.
“In a time when schools are facing safety concerns such as bullying, unauthorised intrusions, and rising parental anxiety, CCTV installations should be treated as a higher priority,” he said.
Mordi highlighted that many schools, especially in rural areas, still lack adequate security systems. Teachers are unable to monitor every corner of school grounds throughout the day.
He emphasised that CCTV systems could help:
- Reduce cases of bullying and gangsterism.
- Prevent unauthorised intrusions.
- Provide critical evidence in the event of any incidents.
He added that an effective school security system not only prevents undesirable incidents but also instills confidence among parents and educators.
In his statement, Mordi outlined three key calls to action:
- Reevaluate the spending priorities — ensuring allocations reflect the urgent needs of schools.
- Ensure transparency in contract awards — the public deserves to know who benefits from large-scale projects like the badge procurement.
- Develop a comprehensive school safety plan — including CCTV, secure fencing, routine patrols, and collaboration with parent-community groups.
“I will continue to raise this matter in Parliament, as our children must not become victims of misplaced government priorities,” Mordi asserted.
