Bahari Asyek Brings the Soul of Malay Elegance to New Zealand

In the grand St James Theatre of Wellington, soft lights illuminated flowing fabrics of baju kurung and kebaya, each piece whispering the story of Malay elegance and grace.

For Zahalina Ab Rahman, founder of Bahari Asyek, the moment marked the realization of a dream — to see Malay traditional fashion celebrated on an international stage.

Invited by the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington, Bahari Asyek became part of the 62nd Malaysia Day celebration, where it collaborated with PADAT Selangor to showcase 20 traditional outfits — all intricately detailed with handpicked textiles, fine tailoring, and authentic accessories.

“Our mission is not just to design clothes, but to share our identity.

Each garment tells the story of who we are — refined, respectful, and deeply rooted in culture,” Zahalina explained.

The collection captivated diplomats, dignitaries, and locals alike, with many praising it as a graceful bridge between Malaysia’s heritage and modern creativity.

The event also featured traditional Malay performances and local delicacies, turning the celebration into a full sensory experience of Malaysian culture.

Despite limited resources, Zahalina and her team persevered, driven by passion and national pride.

“If Japan can elevate the kimono and Korea the hanbok, then Malaysia must champion the baju kurung and kebaya as symbols of timeless beauty,” she said.

After this milestone, Bahari Asyek aims to bring Malay craftsmanship to more international runways, reinforcing that tradition and modernity can coexist — beautifully.
