Sarawak’s Dams to Anchor Regional Green Energy Transition

KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak’s hydroelectric dams are being developed into comprehensive green energy platforms to support the state’s transition towards sustainable power.

In a speech read by Datuk Ibrahim Baki at the ICDSME 2025 Conference here today, he said Sarawak is combining hydro and solar power at projects such as the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Dam, which now hosts a floating solar farm.

“The hybrid system increases clean energy output without using new land, while improving water management and reducing evaporation,” he said.

Abang Johari added that Sarawak’s energy initiatives also support the ASEAN Power Grid vision and regional energy security.

He revealed that Sarawak Energy Berhad has received approval from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority to export up to 1,000 MW of green energy via an undersea cable.

He said dam safety remains a key strategic element under PCDS 2030, which aims to build a high-income and environmentally sustainable Sarawak.
