KOTA BHARU: After more than 20 years, Kelantan is set to overhaul its Islamic Family Law Enactment, with a new bill to be presented at the state assembly next week.
Speaker Amar Abdullah said the last amendment in 2002 no longer reflects current realities, prompting the government to modernise the legislation.
The upcoming bill will include revised penalty limits to keep pace with current economic conditions and introduce new provisions related to marriage and family law within the Islamic legal framework.
“It is essentially a full renewal of the 2002 enactment,” said Amar, adding that the legislation will be tabled by Asri Mat Daud, who chairs the State Islamic Development and Dakwah Committee.
He also confirmed that the assembly will sit for five days, starting tomorrow, with Menteri Besar Datuk Nassuruddin Daud presenting the 2025 state budget on the first day.
Legal observers view the new enactment as part of Kelantan’s broader effort to strengthen its Islamic governance framework while ensuring that penalties and procedures remain relevant to current times.
