Higher Efficiency Standards Ahead: Malaysia Tightens Air Conditioner Rating Criteria for 2026–2029
Malaysia’s Energy Commission (ST) will implement a new star rating framework for air conditioning products covering the period from 2026 to 2029, strengthening national standards for energy efficiency and promoting the use of greener household appliances.
The upgraded rating system increases the minimum threshold under the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), meaning only products that truly demonstrate improved efficiency will qualify. This move aligns with technological progress and the government’s commitment to sustainable energy management.
However, during the transition period, consumers may continue to see air conditioners with old labels in the market. ST clarified that the new ratings apply only to products submitting certification applications from 1 January 2026 onward, while previously certified units may continue using their existing labels until expiry.
Labels indicating the year 2026 or beyond signify that the product has been rated under the new schedule. Consumers are advised to review label information carefully, including power consumption details and certification year.
To enhance transparency, the labels are equipped with QR codes, allowing users to easily access full certification information, making purchasing decisions more informed and data-driven.
Beyond helping households reduce electricity bills, the initiative supports Malaysia’s environmental agenda, contributing to carbon reduction and responsible energy usage. Further information is available through ST’s website.
The introduction of this stricter star rating system marks another significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey toward energy-efficient consumer products, ensuring better protection and greater value for consumers while reinforcing environmental sustainability.
