Opposition MPs Demand Wisma Putra Defend Anwar Over Thai General’s Spy Allegation

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian opposition has urged Wisma Putra to speak out decisively following the circulation of a viral video in which retired Thai General A. Rangsi Kitiyansap accused Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of espionage for the United States.

Calling the remarks “grave and unacceptable,” Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said silence from the Foreign Ministry could be perceived as weakness.

“It’s not just about defending one man — it’s about defending the integrity of Malaysia’s leadership. Wisma Putra must issue a strong statement, either diplomatically or officially, to set the record straight,” he said in Parliament.

He added that Kitiyansap’s status as a former high-ranking military figure gives the allegations an added weight that cannot be ignored.

Datuk Seri Dr. Shahidan Kassim (Arau) also called for immediate clarification, recalling how he had consistently promoted Anwar as a “hero” and peacemaker during international dialogues between Thailand and Cambodia.

“Without clear facts from the government, I cannot continue defending the Prime Minister abroad,” Shahidan said.

The viral interview — translated and widely shared online — depicts Kitiyansap labelling Anwar as an “ASEAN insider working for Washington,” and accusing him of facilitating U.S. economic involvement through the Thailand–Cambodia peace pact.
