Malaysia to Open More Safe Houses for Trafficking Victims

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — The Home Ministry will establish more safe houses for human trafficking victims to enhance Malaysia’s victim support system, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Speaking at the 2025 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons event, Saifuddin said the initiative aims to ensure rescued victims—especially women and children—receive better protection, rehabilitation, and reintegration assistance.

He noted that while every state has at least one safe house except Sarawak, more are needed to meet growing demand. The effort will involve collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, and international organisations.

Saifuddin also highlighted Malaysia’s continued Tier 2 ranking in the US Trafficking in Persons Report, attributing it to strong political commitment and cooperation.

Referring to a recent maritime tragedy near Thai waters involving suspected trafficking victims, he said 13 survivors have been rescued so far.

The minister reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to its National Action Plan on Anti-Trafficking and ASEAN’s regional cooperation to combat trafficking and uphold human rights.
