Malaysia Issues Safety Alert for Citizens in Cambodia as Thailand–Cambodia Conflict Intensifies Again

The Malaysian government has urged its citizens in Cambodia to avoid travelling to areas along the Thailand–Cambodia border, where deadly clashes have once again erupted despite a ceasefire agreement reached only months ago.

In an advisory on Wednesday, Wisma Putra listed five provinces — Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang and Pursat — as zones to avoid. These districts have seen renewed military engagements involving artillery exchanges, civilian casualties, and significant population displacement.

The ministry stressed that Malaysians should stay informed through credible media sources, comply fully with directives from Cambodian authorities, and avoid unnecessary travel until the situation stabilises. “The safety of Malaysians abroad is our priority,” the statement said.

The Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh has activated emergency support measures, providing a 24-hour hotline, email contact and website guidance for those who require assistance.

The long-standing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand flared violently in July, prompting a five-day standoff. Diplomatic intervention later produced the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, but Monday’s resurgence of armed conflict has raised alarm across the region. Early reports confirm several fatalities and thousands forced to flee to temporary shelters.

Images shared by international media show families — including young children — being transported away from conflict zones on tractors, underscoring the severity of the situation.
