Johari Abdul Ghani’s Appointment as MITI Minister Seen as Strategic Move

KEPALA BATAS, Dec 17 — The appointment of Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has been widely described as a timely and strategic decision to strengthen Malaysia’s economic direction amid increasingly complex global challenges.

Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said Johari’s extensive experience in the corporate sector and national financial administration makes him well suited to lead the ministry.

According to Reezal, Johari’s background provides him with a strong understanding of both policy formulation and the practical realities faced by businesses and investors.

“He brings with him not only corporate experience but also deep exposure to national fiscal management, having previously served as finance minister. This combination is a major advantage for MITI,” he told reporters after attending a school graduation ceremony in Kepala Batas.

Reezal noted that Johari’s tenure as finance minister gave him critical insight into Malaysia’s fiscal position, enabling him to align trade and investment strategies with broader economic priorities.

MITI, he said, plays a central role in shaping Malaysia’s investment landscape, strengthening industrial development and positioning the country within global supply chains.

“In today’s uncertain global environment, leadership that understands both macroeconomic risks and industry-level realities is essential,” Reezal added.

He also described Johari as the most suitable candidate to succeed Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, expressing confidence that Malaysia’s economic performance could be further strengthened under his leadership.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, appointing Johari, who previously served as Minister of Plantation and Commodities, as the new MITI minister.

As part of the reshuffle, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin was appointed Deputy Minister of MITI, while former MITI leadership was reassigned to other portfolios.

Reezal expressed hope that the new Cabinet lineup would enhance governance efficiency and improve policy communication with stakeholders, particularly the business community.
