Final Decision on Carey Island Port Hinges on Cabinet Framework – Selangor MB

SHAH ALAM: Selangor will only make a final decision on the proposed third port at Carey Island after receiving a detailed project framework from the Federal Cabinet, according to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said the Cabinet is expected to present the framework in January next year, which will enable the state government to evaluate the proposal from administrative, economic and land management perspectives.

He explained that the state government has already identified key land assets to support the project, including 1,011.71 hectares of seabed allocated to PKNS.

Additionally, a 687.96-hectare tract owned by Yayasan Selangor will be jointly managed with PKNS, ensuring that the state retains oversight over land use and development decisions.

Amirudin emphasised that any developer selected by the Federal Government must engage directly with PKNS, in line with the state’s decision on land governance.

The Carey Island port proposal was first revealed in 2023 as part of plans to expand Port Klang’s capacity, with local companies prioritised as potential operators.

Port Klang remains one of the busiest ports in South-east Asia, and capacity expansion has long been seen as critical to maintaining Malaysia’s competitiveness in global trade.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently reiterated the urgency of the project, directing agencies to accelerate implementation and warning against further delays.

Selangor officials have indicated that while the state recognises the project’s strategic value, it will ensure that any final approval aligns with sustainable development goals and long-term economic planning.
