SYDNEY: The confirmation that the Bondi Beach shooter was an Indian national has heightened concerns over the transnational nature of violent extremism, as Australian and Indian authorities work closely to unravel the full scope of the deadly attack.
Police identified the primary suspect as Sajid Akram, a 50-year-old Indian-born resident of Australia, who was killed by law enforcement after launching a shooting spree during a Hanukkah celebration. The attack claimed 15 lives and left dozens injured, marking Australia’s worst mass shooting in nearly 30 years.
Indian police officials stated that Sajid had left India 27 years ago and had lived most of his adult life in Australia. He reportedly returned to India only six times since emigrating, and there were no known criminal records or extremist links associated with him during his time in India.
