Malaysia Hits 200-Medal Target at SEA Games, Taufiq Johari Praises Athletes’ Grit

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia achieved a major milestone at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand after surpassing its overall target of 200 medals, underlining the nation’s strong sporting performance with two days of competition still remaining.

The achievement was confirmed when the national track cycling team delivered the 200th medal through the men’s team pursuit event at the Hua Mark Velodrome in Bangkok.

Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari congratulated the country’s athletes, coaches and support staff, describing the milestone as a testament to their determination, discipline and collective sacrifice.

“Congratulations to all our national heroes and heroines. Reaching the 200-medal target reflects the relentless effort and fighting spirit shown by our athletes throughout the Games,” he said in a social media post.

The historic medal was secured by track cyclists Azim Aliyas, Hafiq Jafri, Yusri Shaari and Newjoe Lau, who produced a commanding performance to defeat the host nation Thailand in a high-intensity final.

The victory also marked Malaysia’s 45th gold medal so far, strengthening the country’s standing as one of the dominant sporting nations in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia’s medal haul was further boosted by standout performances on the same day, including Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom’s dramatic late sprint to clinch gold in the men’s keirin event.

Nur Aisyah Mohamad Zubir also delivered a breakthrough performance, capturing gold in the women’s scratch race after edging out competitors from Singapore and Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the men’s compound archery team added another gold medal despite challenging windy conditions, while the national men’s football team secured bronze after defeating the Philippines 2-1.

Taufiq Johari said the 200-medal milestone signals that Malaysia’s sports development pathway is moving in the right direction and should inspire athletes to aim even higher in future international competitions.
