Sarawak Positions Education as Economic Catalyst Through Ambitious Free Tertiary Scheme

KUCHING – The launch of Sarawak’s Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) reflects a strategic move by the state to position education as a central driver of economic growth, through systematic investment in human capital development.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that while Sarawak continues advancing infrastructure, green economy initiatives and digital transformation, equal importance is placed on nurturing a generation capable of leading these sectors.

The scheme includes 64 undergraduate programmes and benefits around 10,000 students, costing RM250 million. More significantly, it removes income barriers by providing equal access to tertiary studies.

Implemented through four state-owned universities, FTES ensures greater educational inclusivity, while monthly allowances help ensure students can sustain their studies without financial pressure.

The programme’s targeted academic fields — STEM, healthcare, law, economics and psychology — demonstrate a strategic focus on sectors crucial to Sarawak’s development trajectory.

Complementing FTES is the establishment of Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School, which prepares students earlier through globally recognised education exposure.

Together, these initiatives underline Sarawak’s long-term plan: to cultivate world-class local talent capable of competing internationally and steering the state confidently towards its high-income vision.
