Funerals attended by Cambodia’s First Lady highlight unacknowledged troop deaths in Thai border fighting

Cambodia has yet to formally announce any soldier fatalities in the renewed border conflict with Thailand, but official images showing Prime Minister Hun Manet’s wife attending funerals appear to contradict the government’s silence.

A post released on the prime minister’s verified Facebook page revealed that First Lady Pich Chanmony visited ceremonies honouring fallen soldiers, offering condolences and prayers while describing the deaths as a national tragedy.

Names and portraits of at least two soldiers were displayed during the services.

The latest round of clashes has resulted in heavy casualties, with Thailand reporting more than twenty military deaths and Cambodia confirming deaths among civilians.

However, the lack of acknowledgment regarding the deaths of Cambodian troops has prompted scrutiny, especially following visual confirmation of funeral proceedings attended by the country’s First Lady.

Despite this, Cambodian authorities have refrained from issuing public clarification.

While the Defence Ministry avoided commenting directly on the matter, it confirmed continued military exchanges along the border, alleging fresh artillery strikes from Thai forces. Both Cambodia and Thailand continue to blame each other for triggering the conflict and insist their respective militaries are acting defensively. Officials from the two countries have begun negotiation efforts at a border meeting point in hopes of achieving a ceasefire or at least reducing hostilities.

The longstanding dispute originates from unresolved border demarcation issues dating back to the colonial era, compounded by competing claims over historic temple ruins situated in contested areas.

As fighting spreads across multiple provinces along the border, concerns continue to grow regarding regional stability and humanitarian impact.

With diplomatic efforts underway but ground clashes ongoing, the situation remains tense and uncertain.
