Do Not Fuel Political Tensions, Shahidan Warns Pas Members Amid Perlis Crisis

Central Pas Committee member Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has reminded party members, particularly elected representatives and those holding key positions, to refrain from issuing statements on social media that may intensify the ongoing political crisis in Perlis. He cautioned that irresponsible remarks, accusations or attempts to label certain individuals publicly would only worsen the already heated situation.

Shahidan likened such behaviour to “pouring fuel on a raging fire”, especially as the party is grappling with the fallout following the termination of membership of three state assemblymen and the subsequent resignation of the Perlis Menteri Besar. He stressed that Pas traditionally upholds a culture of resolving matters through consultation, discussions and unity rather than confrontation.

He added that Pas has clear guidelines grounded in party leadership and official statements from the President, and any response to the crisis should remain aligned with these directives. He emphasised that from both religious and ethical perspectives, acts that spark further division or confusion are not acceptable.

The crisis escalated after Perlis State Assembly Speaker Rus’sele Eizan declared unexpected vacancies in three constituencies—Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji—following the cessation of membership of three Pas assemblymen. The situation arose after they, along with several Bersatu representatives, were alleged to have met the Raja of Perlis to submit statutory declarations withdrawing support for Menteri Besar Mohd. Shukri Ramli.

Following the political development, Mohd. Shukri tendered his resignation to the Raja of Perlis, further intensifying uncertainty in the state’s political landscape. The issue has generated widespread discussion, speculation and misinformation, particularly across social media platforms.

Shahidan, who also serves as the state’s Pas Deputy Commissioner III, said the party’s immediate focus is to calm the situation, restore unity and prepare for any upcoming political situation, whether a by-election or a general election. He said he has been meeting with local communities almost every night to explain the real situation and counter misinformation.

Touching on the appointment of the next Menteri Besar, Shahidan stated that the authority rests entirely with the Raja of Perlis. He explained that while names may be proposed, the final decision lies solely with the Ruler, who will act based on the individual deemed to command majority support in the State Assembly in accordance with the Constitution.

He urged all party members to remain disciplined, respect the democratic process and place trust in the institution of the monarchy. Shahidan reiterated that unity, patience and wisdom are crucial in ensuring that Pas and the people of Perlis can move forward from the ongoing crisis.
