Police in Kota Bharu have confirmed that 10 individuals, including five women, have been remanded for four days in relation to the riot that took place at Melor Public Market. The decision was granted by Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid to allow investigators sufficient time to carry out detailed inquiries.
The individuals, aged between their 20s and 50s, are being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for participating in public rioting. Their detention follows an earlier remand of two women who were arrested a day earlier for the same case.
Police reported that a total of 12 people, consisting of five men and seven women, were detained following the incident. The altercation, which occurred around 2.30pm, resulted in at least one woman sustaining bodily injuries. The case quickly garnered public attention as footage of the fight spread through social media platforms.
Kota Bharu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd. Rosdi Daud explained that the investigation was triggered when a 19-year-old victim lodged a complaint alleging that she had been assaulted by another woman. The confrontation reportedly escalated and eventually led to a group altercation involving multiple individuals.
Rosdi stressed that such incidents are taken seriously because they involve public peace and safety. He said the police are now working to gather comprehensive evidence including CCTV footage, witness testimonies, and viral recordings circulating online.
He also called on the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation that could complicate investigations. Instead, he urged the community to trust the ongoing legal process and refrain from engaging in actions that may further disrupt public order.
Police reminded the public that disputes should never be allowed to escalate into violence, especially in crowded places that could endanger innocent bystanders. Law enforcement authorities assured that they remain committed to maintaining security and ensuring justice is served.
With the suspects now under remand, investigations will continue to determine the roles of each individual involved and whether further arrests are necessary. Police assured that updates will be provided as the case progresses.
