From Historic German Settlement to Agro-Tourism Marvel: Kampung Parit Jerman Rises with “Jermanpine”

Long associated with its unique German-inspired name and historical narratives, Kampung Parit Jerman in Pontian has taken a remarkable leap forward by reinventing itself as a modern agro-tourism destination driven by pineapple cultivation excellence.

The village’s name is believed to originate from the presence of German settlers who once lived and farmed here. Relics of that era, including old brick remnants and stone staircases, remain visible, serving as physical evidence of the European presence around the 1940s. These traces add depth to the village’s identity, offering visitors a glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of local history.

However, Kampung Parit Jerman’s contemporary fame lies in its role as the heart of the Projek Tanaman Nanas Berkelompok (PTNB), focusing on MD2 pineapple cultivation. Locally referred to as “Jermanpine”, this premium pineapple variety has become the symbol of the village’s transformation.

Spearheaded by community leader Muhammad Anal Talha, the PTNB project spans more than 30 hectares and has achieved an impressive milestone – planting one million pineapple plants in a single cultivation phase. This achievement has turned the once-quiet rural landscape into a lively tourist attraction, particularly during weekends and school holidays.

Tourists arriving here are not limited to locals alone. Domestic visitors from across Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak, frequently visit the plantation, alongside international tourists from Germany, Japan, South Korea, Europe and Africa. The combination of history, agricultural uniqueness and scenic plantation landscapes makes Kampung Parit Jerman an irresistible stopover.

The plantation currently produces up to 25,000 pineapples monthly, supporting not only fresh fruit sales but also stimulating the development of small-scale industries. Local entrepreneurs have introduced a wide range of pineapple-based products including juices, jams, pastries, desserts, traditional confectionery and innovative snacks – enhancing economic resilience among residents.

Adding to the attraction is the Jermanpine Restaurant, offering signature pineapple-based dishes and desserts in an environment surrounded by picturesque fields. Visitors enjoy culinary delights while appreciating expansive plantation views – a refreshing contrast to urban dining experiences.

Kampung Parit Jerman also promotes experiential tourism. Guests can pick freshly ripened pineapples, enjoy photography at scenic farm locations and engage in recreational ATV rides circling the plantation. These experiences provide meaningful interaction with nature while supporting sustainable community-based tourism.

For villagers, particularly the youth, the project has unlocked new income opportunities. Many are now involved in agricultural management, processing industries, tourism hospitality and entrepreneurial ventures linked to the plantation ecosystem.

With these achievements, Kampung Parit Jerman is no longer just a village with a fascinating name. It has become a proud symbol of how history, agriculture and innovation can combine to create a dynamic tourism identity, positioning it as Pontian’s newest must-visit destination.
