First voting phase in Myanmar’s 2025 general election concludes; observers report orderly process

YANGON — The first stage of Myanmar’s 2025 general election has concluded, marking the beginning of a multi-phase voting process that will determine representation in national and regional legislatures.

Polling centres opened early Sunday morning and officially closed in the afternoon, with counting commencing immediately after under the supervision of election workers, international observers, candidates and media representatives.

Myanmar’s Defence and Security Council Information Team confirmed that 139 international observers and diplomatic representatives were present to oversee the process, which they described as orderly during the first phase.

The nationwide election will continue with Phase Two on January 11, 2026, and Phase Three on January 25, 2026, covering a total of 692 constituencies.

Nearly 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties are contesting seats, supported by more than 21,000 polling stations across the country.

Comprehensive election results will only be declared after all phases conclude. Myanmar previously held its general election in November 2020.
