Perak doubles commitment to humane stray control, plans wider programme outreach in 2026

IPOH — Perak is strengthening its humane stray animal management agenda by increasing its allocation to RM300,000 next year, enabling wider coverage and more structured implementation of welfare-focused programmes statewide.

According to State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, the additional funding demonstrates the government’s serious commitment towards addressing public safety, health concerns and environmental cleanliness, while ensuring animal welfare principles are upheld.

She said the limited allocation previously available meant the programme could only operate in Ipoh and Kampar, but the expanded budget will allow implementation in other hotspot areas such as Taiping and Manjung.

Speaking after officiating the closing of the Perak Pawsitive Initiative 2025, Ng highlighted that the initiative — introduced in 2024 — is built on sustainable strategies centred around neutering, vaccination and continuous community education.

Additionally, the state has set aside RM100,000 specifically for the development of stray animal shelters in several strategic locations to support temporary housing and care needs.

Commenting on the soon-to-be-launched Feeder Mapping Application, Ng said the platform aims to enhance coordination, improve planning and strengthen cooperation between authorities, NGOs and the community through accurate and real-time data.

The app, expected to be accessible early next year, will be open to feeders, volunteers and organisations working directly with stray populations.

Ng stressed that the initiative embodies the essence of smart city development — using technology as a functional tool to solve real issues, streamline actions and ensure more effective and humane stray animal management.
