Court Denies Bail as Myanmar Man Charged with Possessing Revolver Pleads Not Guilty

BUTTERWORTH: A 39-year-old Myanmar national pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today to a charge of unlawful possession of a revolver during a police operation in Perai earlier this month.

The accused, Aung Soe, allegedly possessed a .38 calibre revolver without a serial number and without any licence. The firearm was found during a raid related to a drug investigation on Dec 21.

He was charged under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which provides for a minimum 14 years’ imprisonment and not less than six strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by Hussaini Abdul Rashid.

Judge Roslan Hamid refused bail and fixed Feb 6 for further mention of the case.
